10 1/4" Royal Scott

Here we have an interesting engine that we are really pleased to have come through our workshops.  This is to our knowledge the only slide valve 10 1/4" gauge Royal Scot.  Despite being pretty massive, (the engine alone weighs about a ton when full of water), there are a few 10 1/4" gauge Scots out there.  It's a popular and robust design from the pen of Henry Greenly, and with castings being made available originally by Bassett Lowke quite a few people took up the challenge and made one.  That doesn't mean it's particularly common, in this size any prototype where there are more than a couple of them is pretty unusual, but certainly with slide valves this one is we think unique.  Now quite apart from generally wearing the valve in rather than wearing it's self out, slide valve locos usually sound really good too.  There's something about the particular dynamics of it that makes for a great chuff, and coupled with the Scot's relatively small chimney, we expect this to be a really satisfying loco to drive up a bank with a decent train load behind!

The boiler is steel and in really good condition having been well stored in a museum for a good number of years now, but we will of course give her a full fresh 10 year test and certificate before delivery to her new owner, so everything on that score is reliably good to go.  Mechanically too she's in really tight condition.  Certainly it doesn't seem to us as though the loco has seen a great deal of use, and definitely nothing too strenuous that has left it's scars.

Fitted with a couple of decent sized injectors, and mechanical lubrication from a large reservoir under the front running boards, this is a well sorted, well presented example that definitely deserves to be back out there on track being enjoyed!  If you've always fancied a 10 1/4" gauge Royal Scot, this is a great example, and if you've ever fancied joining the 10 1/4" world with your own toy, this would be a superb way to reliably take that plunge!
